About

We study ancient and modern history around the world, from the lives of aristocrats and politicians to those of soldiers, slaves and children.

Our focus is on uncovering the details of everyday life and asking profound questions about how events in our past shape the modern world.

In particular, we look at the experiences of minority groups, often overlooked in mainstream histories, to uncover fresh insights into the societies that preceded us.

While we study in archives, we also adopt philosophical approaches, excavate historical sites and use modern technology to help us piece together material objects that can reveal people’s beliefs, relationships and even their emotions.

A big part of work is helping communities to understand and engage with their histories. Our public engagement work is led by the Manchester Centre for Public History and Heritage, which builds strong links between our researchers and the city, the region and the wider world.

Our postgraduate students benefit from a strong culture of research-led teaching and learning, as well as our well-developed links with other universities, heritage organisations and government agencies around the world.
