Roadworks and road closures

This page shows roadworks by Council and any of our contractors that may result in significant detours and delays.

It doesn't identify roadworks being done by other agencies, such as power and telecommunications companies.

Most of our roading projects take place over summer, but we carry out some routine maintenance to our water network over winter.

Amberley Avenue bridge repair

A section of Amberley Avenue is now reduced to one lane to ensure the safety of all road users as we investigate a structural issue on a bridge.

The bridge spans across a stormwater drain on the section of Amberley Avenue between Pencarrow St and Caroline Cres.

A small road bridge crosses a culvert.

The culvert under the bridge was scheduled for repairs in 2024, though its structural condition has deteriorated more rapidly than anticipated. We're now putting restrictions in place while we consider how best to address the issue.

As part of our mitigation efforts, traffic management is now in place to reduce the section of road to a single lane of traffic. Additionally, to further ensure safety, the area is closed to commercial and heavy vehicles until the repair is completed.

Acting Transport and Development Group Manager Bryce Hosking says we are committed to taking swift action to address this issue and get the bridge back open.

"We appreciate the reduction to one lane may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation during this period. The safety of our residents is our top priority, and we are working diligently to address the structural concerns of the bridge on Amberley Avenue."

In December, elected members decided to replace the culvert with a new 12-metre single span bridge.

Custom Street, Ashhurst, upgrade

The upgrade of Custom Street in Ashhurst continues lifting the street to an urban standard with footpaths, drainage improvements, and road widening.

This project is due for completion by 30 June 2024.

Featherston Street safety upgrades

At a council meeting on 1 May, elected members voted to pause all construction activities on Featherston Street. The only exception is the ongoing manufacturing of concrete separators.

A report outlining alternative options regarding in-lane bus stops will be presented to elected members on Wednesday 22 May. During this meeting, a decision will be made on the design of the bus stops.

In the meantime, other safety improvement work is approved to ensure we meet the 30 June construction and funding deadline set by NZTA.

Construction on this project is being carried out in two stages:

  • Stage 1 (Aroha to Rangitikei Streets): From 16 January to late-February.
  • Stage 2 (Rangitikei to North Streets): From late-February to late April.

To minimise disruption to daily traffic, construction will take place at night, from 6pm to 6am Sunday to Thursday.

During these periods, road closures and detours will be in place. The road will return to normal during the day, but there may be reduced speeds and cones in some areas. There will be no work on Friday or Saturday nights, or on public holidays.

Businesses and schools along the construction route will remain accessible throughout the work period.

Cars must not be parked on the street within the construction zone after 6pm.

Railway Road full road closure

Railway Road is under a 24/7 road closure from Monday 29 April.

This job includes upgrading the surface of the road so it can continue to be used by freight and heavy vehicles.

Road closures are starting from Monday 29 April and the job will take about two months.

We are closing the road to enable contractor Fulton Hogan to rebuild the road as quickly as possible from the rail bridge to the entrance of, but not including City Fitness. This means they can work two shifts per day, from 5am to 11pm.

The main entrance to City Fitness will be closed, however, the secondary access entrance just before the main entrance will be unaffected for customers to access the gym.

A temporary pedestrian crossing will be constructed near PlaceMakers/Francis Way to City Fitness for anyone that parks on Francis Way.

The long-term plan is to complete the entire section from the rail bridge to Tremaine Avenue, however, this work will be staged in three sections over multiple years.

VMS boards are in place to assist with detours.

Victoria Esplanade safety upgrades

Raised pedestrian crossings and landscape work is being done at Victoria Esplanade by Wildbase Recovery Centre and Esplanade Café. Parts of the road will be closed – follow signage.

The Esplanade will not be open to traffic until 9am each day and there will be no through traffic from Park Road to Manawaroa Street for the duration of construction.

On Friday 3 May, Victoria Drive will be temporarily closed to facilitate the colouring of the newly installed raised pedestrian crossing.

From Monday 6 May, section of Palm Drive will be closed to through traffic. We expect to complete the raised pedestrian crossing in front of the Esplanade Café in six weeks.
